communityovereverything Danni's Therapy
Over the past five years, we have been able to watch numerous counselors create a special environment within our centers. Providing a space where people can be themselves is important to us, and we are happy to encourage mental health awareness and self-positive thinking. We had the opportunity to speak with CityCentral Richardson Member, Danni Williams, to learn about what led her to opening her own practice and how she helps those within the LGBTQ+ community flourish into adulthood!
Tell us a little about you and your practice.
In my practice I see primarily teens who fall under the LGBTQ umbrella, assisting them in becoming adults who think and make good choices, I work with families regardless of their spiritual, religious or schooling choices and with many different family dynamics.
What lead you to the position you’re in now?
I started with the Resource Center in Dallas while working on my LCSW license and learned that I love working with teens and when I completed my licensing process and moved to my own private practice many of my teens and adults were able to follow me.
What sets your practice apart from other counselors?
I am willing to accept people where they are, I do not claim to understand all of the dynamics of being LGBTQ but I am familiar with many of them and the resources they need to successfully navigate this time in their lives. My teens and adult clients will tell you I often send them home with a written list of things we have agreed together will benefit them, tasks to complete, ways to relax or conversation topics to share.
What is something you wish you’d known when you were just starting your practice?
That it is ok to charge people full prices and to value my education and experience.
How to do you navigate your work-life balance?
I take time on the weekends to do fun things with my spouse and children, we love to explore the area, hike when it is not too hot and find festivals and events to attend.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I love seeing the growth in people, when they can verbalize their feelings and feel valued as who they are.
How has being a part of the CityCentral community affected you and your practice?
I love the ease of getting in the building and that I never feel like I am in a huge building alone even when I see clients late in the evenings
If you had a friend in town, and you could take them to one of your favorite restaurants or spots in your community, where would you take them to?
My favorite place to go for a quick lunch or a more relaxed dinner is Fish and Tails, they have the best shrimp cocktails in the area!
