Tell us a little about Laura Nelson Counseling.
I started my own practice in 2019, and CityCentral has been my office home since that time. I’ve been a licensed professional counselor for over ten years. I specialize in working with young adults and Millennials on issues relating to generational trauma, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, stress, and perfectionism.
What led you to start Laura Nelson Counseling?
Since becoming a licensed counselor, it has always been a dream and a goal to own my own private practice. After being in a group practice for several years, I felt a call to start my own practice.
What sets your business apart from your competitors?
I meet clients where they’re at and provide a personalized counseling approach to each person through a diverse set of treatment options. I love working with different kinds of clients, and I often hear from clients that therapy with me “feels different”, and they never thought they could find the kind of relief that working with me gave them. I wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of therapy, and watching clients experience it is what gets me out of bed in the morning.
What is something you wish you’d known when you were just starting your business?
They don’t teach you about running a business in graduate school, so it was a big learning curve in many ways. But it’s been a fun challenge to learn about running a business.
How do you navigate your work-life balance?
Being in the helping-people profession, it is extremely important to have work-life balance. I’ve learned to leave work at work and have boundaries with myself, such as when I stop checking emails and answering phone calls.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is being able to be part of people’s journeys of growth and healing.
How has being a part of the Plano community affected you and your business?
Plano is a great location to have a business. It's centrally located, diverse, and easily accessible to all surrounding areas.
If you had a friend in town and you could take them to one of your favorite restaurants or spots in your community, where would you take them?
Harvest in McKinney is hands down the best restaurant in the whole North Dallas area.
