Today we have the pleasure of highlighting the team from Merchants Bonding, operating out of CityCentral Richardson. Tell us a little bit about Merchants Bonding

Merchants is one of the top surety bond writers in the United States.  Our primary line of business involves issuing bonds which act as a three party agreement and financially guarantees that obligations will be fulfilled by all parties involved.  Based out of Des Moines, IA since 1933, we currently have offices across the United States and employ over 280 people.

What sets your business apart from your competitors?

At Merchants we pride ourselves on providing a first class service experience and a common sense underwriting approach.  Unlike a lot of our competitors that handle multiple lines of business, Merchants’ focus is almost exclusively on surety which allows us the ability to experts in our field.

What led Merchants Bonding to opening an office in Dallas?

Merchants Bonding opened our Dallas office in January of 2010.  Prior to adding a local office, marketing and underwriting was handled out of our Austin, TX office.  Technology enhancements were primary drivers that allowed us to operate more efficiently and effectively in smaller field offices but also allowed us the ability to have a more consistent and dedicated presence.

How to do you navigate your work-life balance?

Working in a field office allows for a very flexible work schedule that can certainly get in the way of a healthy work-life balance.  There are times that I find myself working evening or weekend hours at home out of convenience compared to “leaving work at work”.  I have challenged myself to shut down my work laptop everyday around 4:30 and not log back on until the next morning.  It has been a change and changes are often challenging, but it has given me more time to be present at home with my wife and kids.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Leading our office and seeing the growth, not only in production, but in career experience for the people I manage.

How has being a part of the CityCentral community affected you and your business?

We have tried out best to create more of a structured work schedule in terms of “in office” hours and CityCentral has been a great place to reengage the team while also feeling comfortable.  The varying workspaces offer different areas to talk and connect which helps to break up the day.  Meeting other members of the CityCentral community has been a breath of fresh air as well as it provides an opportunity to chat with folks outside of our industry.

If you had a friend visiting from out of town, where would you take them?

Sushi Sake in Richardson is a great spot for really fresh sushi.

We would like to thank the Merchants Bonding team for taking the time to tell us their story and teach us something new. If you are interested in spotlighting your business with us, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your community manager – we are always eager to help elevate your business in any way we can!
